Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences  is one of the nine health science institutions in Nepal. Named after the beautiful tourist city of Pokhara, this academy is dedicated to the study and teaching of medical sciences. It is located in Ramghat (Ward No. 11), Pokhara Metropolitan City, Kaski District, in Gandaki Province—one of Nepal’s seven federal provinces. Regarded as a beacon of hope for medical education, PoAHS is considered a center for medical learning in the country.

The “Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences Act, 2072 B.S.” was passed by the legislative Parliament in 2072 B.S. (2015 AD), upgrading the then-Western Regional Hospital into an autonomous teaching and health institution, creating PoAHS. Since then, the academy has been contributing to the country through medical education, health services, and research.

The academy was founded with the goal of producing skilled health professionals needed by the nation and providing accessible, high-quality health services to the public, by establishing a system for advanced studies and research in health sciences. As per Article 296 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal, the legislative Parliament established the academy through an act. The act was legally validated on Magh 12, 2072 B.S. (late January or early February 2016 AD) when it was certified by the President. However, efforts to establish the academy had begun as early as 2069 B.S. (2012 AD).

Although the academy was legally founded in 2072 B.S., it took another four years to begin teaching in line with its mission. The true milestone in its educational journey came in 2076 B.S. (2019-2020 AD), when PoAHS first secured 17 postgraduate (MD/MS) seats in six specialties accredited by the Nepal Medical Council.

The first postgraduate seats were allocated as follows:

General Surgery: 4 seats

Obstetrics & Gynaecology: 4 seats

Orthopaedics: 3 seats

General Medicine: 2 seats

Paediatrics: 2 seats

Anaesthesiology: 2 seats

Currently, there are 76 resident doctors studying across first, second, and third-year postgraduate programs. PoAHS is actively preparing infrastructure to launch additional programs at the undergraduate level—MBBS, nursing, public health, allied health sciences—as well as specialized diplomas like DM and MCh.

Set amidst scenic beauty, PoAHS holds great promise. With access to the serene Seti River and a backdrop of the majestic Machapuchare range, the campus environment is both tranquil and inspiring. Nearby, Pokhara’s lakes, caves, temples, and scenic hills further enhance the educational ambiance of the academy.
