About Us

Sugata Buddhist College (Sister Organization of Nepal Buddhist Council) was established in 2012 affiliated to Lumbini Buddhist University. The college has been conducting Masters in Arts in Mahāyāna Buddhism. Since its establishment, the college has produced more than 150 scholars in Mahāyāna Buddhism.

It is situated at Rajshree Mahabihara, Tangal, Patan (near Mangal Bazar) in Lalitpur district of Nepal. The Mahabiharas (Bahils), constructed during Malla periods and Lichhavi periods in various places of the Newar community were aimed for the schooling during those periods. Following the objective of Mahabiharas, Sugata Buddhist College chose the prime location of Patan, which is the center point of Lagenkhel and Patan Durbar Square.

Mahāyāna Buddhism, which is termed as ‘Great Vehicle’ in Buddhism, its philosophy was initially focused on the students from the Newar Buddhist Community only. However, after the time span, many Non-Buddhists are found attracted towards the Mahāyāna Buddhism to get formal education and Sugata Buddhist College is happy to accept them as students and spread Buddhism in wider range.

Our vision

Our vision is to spread out Mahāyāna Buddhism while understanding and cooperating with various other yānas of Buddhism and other religions and cultural values in the society. Sugata Buddhist College has been formed to give students the actual philosophy as per Mahāyāna Buddhism.

Our Mission

Sugata Buddhist College with the objectives to benefit society and to foster talent to bring reform in Nepalese society by disseminating Buddhist Knowledge in true perspective. The scholars produced from the College are skilled as academic researchers.

Message From The Chairman

Nepal, as the birthland of Lord Buddha, holds a special significance for foreign visitors. They feel a sense of reverence when they arrive here and hope to deepen their understanding of Buddhism, including the unique practice of Newar Buddhism in Nepal.

In 1997, when the Nepal Buddhist Council was established, there were no suitable educational institutions in this Buddhist land to teach Buddhism. In contrast, many other countries around the world, such as Japan, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, and others, have numerous schools, colleges, and universities dedicated to spreading Buddhist knowledge in various ways.

We are proud to say that these classes have been highly successful, completing twelve batches by 2013. Over 300 participants have successfully completed the course.

I am pleased to mention that Sugata Buddhist College, established by the Nepal Buddhist Council, has now completed a decade of operation. It has consistently offered the Master’s Program in Mahayana Buddhism. The college has gained recognition for providing quality education, and we take pride in quenching our students’ thirst for knowledge with a steady stream of wisdom.
